The Secret Life of Bees, review by:

This is women's literature, or, as I've been telling others, "it's a chick's book." This book was sent to me by Alyce, but I didn't read it for about a year because someone told me it's sad. It is, but it's also a wonderful piece of women's lit. The protagonist, 14-year-old Lily Owens, isn't lacking in personal revelations. The one that struck me most: "People, in general, would rather die than forgive. It's that hard. If God said in plain language, 'I'm giving you a choice, forgive or die,' a lot of people would go ahead and order their coffin."
